The reasons for elevated mercury contents in lakes without any known mercury pollution are discussed and preliminary results about the effects of peatland drainage are presented. Measures increasing the humus content or the acidity of the lakes are assumed in increased the mercury contents of fish. Such measures are water regulation, ditching and drainage operations.
